Yesterday, my NY Cares partner and I went to the school to sketch our mural design on the walls. Less than a week to go till NY Cares Day! Aside from a few mishaps (like the bulb in the projector burning out and not being able to find a replacement bulb, we did eventually get a second projector), we sketched out all 5 walls and color coded them. It’s basically a giant paint by number, or rather letter; we thought it might be slightly less confusing to write abbreviations for the colors because they’d be easier to remember than say red is 1, blue is 2, etc.
The Atlantic Antic was a HUGE success and as of now the plan is to be back outside of Acorn again next year! The weather…absolutely perfect. Tons of people turned out and the entire street was packed with people and vendors for as far as you could see. I set-up an easel and a small workspace and drew character illustrations. Most of my time there was spent drawing. me drawing = happiness :) And my giant stack of business cards was gone after the first hour. Every time I put a couple out someone took one. Will definitely bring more next year.
One of the girls I drew today was really funny. Bored because her dad was talking to some guy protesting, she came over and hung out with me; she loved her drawing so much that she pulled it out and showed people who went by telling them they should get a drawing, that they were really awesome. How cool is that?! As she was leaving, she wanted to keep carrying it and showing it off, but her dad told her to put it away so nothing would happen to it.
The Atlantic Antic is this Sunday, Oct 4th! And I’m doing my little portrait drawings of kids (adults too) outside of Acorn Toy Shop again from 12-4pm. Acorn is at 323 Atlantic Ave in Brooklyn. Just checked the weather forecast and Sunday looks like it should be nice! :) (Saturday does not appear to be so fortunate…100% rain and thunderstorms all day…yuck!).
I went to see the school that I was assigned to design and paint a mural at for NY Cares Day and got to see the space. It is huge! The space is in the cafeteria of the school and there area these giant columns that divide the space into 5 smaller spaces instead of having one giant wall. NY Cares is fast approaching (it’s already October! when did that happen?!) so my roomie and I will be brainstorming away and sketching out ideas to submit to the school for approval.
